  VERDICT
  Unfortunate experience for diners and leads one to question the level of quality assurance of ‘Living Social’.
  Degustation Experience - Ducks Crossing, Quackers Restaurant Eleebana
  My wife and I were given a Living Social voucher for a ‘degustation’ dinner as a present from our children. We recently used this voucher for the degustation experience at Ducks Crossing Quackers Restaurant in Eleebana, Newcastle.
  The definition (below) of a degustation meal is taken from Wikipedia and describes the event my wife and I were hopefully expecting.
  Degustation is a culinary term meaning a careful, appreciative tasting of various foods and focusing on the gustatory system, the senses, high culinary art and good company. Dégustation is more likely to involve sampling small portions of all of a chef's signature dishes in one sitting. Usually consisting of eight or more courses, it may be accompanied by a matching wine degustation which complements each dish.
  We were greeted with a glass of ‘champagne’ which was obviously an Australian sparking of average quality which accompanied a miniscule canapé that would have been dwarfed by a 50c coin. What followed on was charred, no burnt, bread (not the sourdough as advertised on the sheet of paper) with a small amount of oil and balsamic, then followed 2 mushroom arancini balls the size of medium sized marbles in a sea of rocket, followed by 2 very small pieces of deep-fried squid in another sea of rocket, followed by a small glass of mediocre red wine (no name) to accompany lamb rump (with sinewy meat like from a shank) with vegetables.
  The dessert was an incredibly tough meringue with a small scoop of some sorbet-like dessert with a piece of jelly the size of a matchbox, but only 1 centimetre thick.
  We had tea (bag, not brewed like it claimed on the menu sheet) and two very small pieces of inedible slice, which we took and bite of and left on the plate.
  The signature dishes would not have challenged a first-year apprentice chef or any reasonably competent adult but the advertised price of $109/person beggars belief.
  The restaurant is neither able to claim nor deliver ‘fine dining’ and the level of sophistication required for a degustation experience is sadly lacking.

  Great beef, wine and desserts. We stayed here too. A lovely experience.
